The Differences Between Breathable Multifoil Insulations

The Development of breathable multifoil insulation marks a significant advancement in the insulation industry. It offers a unique combination of thermal efficiency and moisture management. As opposed to traditional insulation materials, this particular product allows for the passage of vapour while maintaining excellent heat retention properties. Let’s examine the differences between breathable multifoil insulations.

Breathable multifoil insulation comprises multiple layers of reflective foil and insulating materials, carefully crafted to achieve a product that maintains a balance between thermal efficiency and breathability. The top layer contains a microporous membrane that allows water vapour to pass through but prevents any liquid water from seeping in. This innovative design effectively addresses a common issue in building insulation – the accumulation of moisture and the resulting complications it brings.

The addition of foil layers is essential in improving the overall thermal efficiency of insulation. These layers efficiently deflect radiant heat, resulting in a decrease in heat transfer within the building. This dual purpose effectively controls both conductive and radiant heat transfer, ultimately leading to a more environmentally friendly and comfortable living space.

It is important to note that while all breathable multifoil insulations share these same qualities, there may be notable differences in the thickness, properties, and performance ratings of each product. It is crucial to understand these variations when selecting the most appropriate product for your specific project requirements.

YBS BreatherQuilt

Our top-performing breathable multifoil insulation, BreatherQuilt, consists of 11 layers. The initial layer is constructed with genuine aluminium foil, which improves its thermal capabilities. The center is composed of several layers of low-emissivity foil and insulation wadding, strategically positioned to create air pockets that enhance its thermal efficiency. The last layer is a breathable membrane that allows the effective transfer of moisture vapour. Ensuring the insulation remains dry and effective in the long run.

Technical Specification

Width – 40mm can be compressed to 7mm

Approved Roof R-value – 1.62 m²K/W

External Emissivity – 0.05

Vapour Resistance – 0.15 MNs/g

Accreditations

YBS BreatherQuilt has been quanted approval by both LABC and BBA, signifying its compliance with building regulations.

YBS Breathe-R

Breathe-R Insulation

Breathe-R is an excellent option for breathable multifoil insulation. It consists of two layers and has a 2mm thickness. The outer layer is constructed from a premium breathable roofing membrane, while the inner layer is a perforated aluminium foil. This specific multifoil offers the lowest thermal performance but is the thinnest option, making it perfect for situations where there is limited space.

Technical Specifications

Width – 2mm

Approved Roof R-value – 0.45 m²K/W

External Emissivity – 0.05

Vapour Resistance – 0.15 MNs/g

YBS Breathe-R Ultra

YBS Breathe-R Ultra provides a slighly improved level of thermal efficiency when compared to the original YBS Breathe-R. This particular product consists if three layers – the first being a breathable membrane, followed by a layer of recycled internal wadding. The third and final layer is a perforated true aluminium foil layer, ensuring maximum breathability.

Technical Specification

Width – 11mm

Approved Roof R-value – 0.71 m²K/W

External Emissivity – 0.05

Vapour Resistance – 0.25 MNs/g

YBS BreatherFoil FR

BreatherFoil FR Roll

The YBS BreatherFoil FR is a one-of-a-kind membrane that functions as both a breathable and venting material. It is specifically designed for timber frame constructions and has been developed to meet trict fire safety redulations, making it ideal for use in timber frame buildings. This innovative product addresses the growing demand for insulation materials that not only enhance building safety, but also promote energy efficiency and provide a comfortable indoor environment.

Technical Specification

Width – 4mm

Approved Roof R-value – 0.79 m²K/W

External Emissivity – 0.05

Vapour Resistance – 0.2 MNs/g

Fire Performance – Class B-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1)

Conclusion

When selecting the appropriate insulation for your specific needs, it is crucial to understand the differences between various types of insulation that are suitable for the job. Although YBS BreatherQuilt is considered the most efficient option, its thickness may not be suitable for certain applications. Other alternatives, like YBS Breathe-R and Breathe-R Ultra, offer thinner insulation but do not perform as well thermally as BreatherQuilt. For timber frame constructions, the only breathable multifoil that is both suitable and fire-resistant is YBS BreatherFoil FR. All of these products have been created and produced in the UK by YBS Insulation.
